Horst Thiele’s Journey from Biological Scientific Illustration to His Own Visual Language
Horst Thiele’s career began with biological scientific illustrations for the phytopathological institute in Aschersleben. In the 1980s, he illustrated seven specialist books on plant diseases, which were highly regarded in professional circles. Beyond this, he created a large number of prints and paintings for his own use, which are being presented to the public for the first time in their entirety in this exhibition. We encounter an understated narrative of the beauty of creation, of the near and far worlds. And all this in a unique visual language that blends realism, comics, hints of Art Nouveau, Cubist, and Surrealist elements. Horst Thiele presents a feast for the eyes. Just in time for his milestone birthday in 2022, we honor the life’s work of an Aschersleben artist who has made significant contributions to art and its dissemination in this city.
