Christine Leweke is one of Germany’s most important textile artists. She received her artistic training at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle from 1948 to 1953. Her teachers included renowned artists such as Charles Crodel, Gustav Weidanz, Annemarie Heuer-Stauß, and Willi Sitte. In the 1950s and 60s, she created large tapestries of high artistic merit for church institutions. Her innovative and experimental approach significantly influenced the development of textile art in the 1970s and 80s. She shared her extensive technical knowledge and passion for textile design in numerous courses and seminars throughout Germany, particularly in her hometown of Halle.
